General audiences will welcome this little gem of a book just as much if not more than mystery readers. Images of this large woman driving her tiny white van or sharing a cup of bush tea with a friend or client while working a case linger pleasantly. Mma Ramotswe's love of Africa, her wisdom and humor, shine through these pages as she shines her own light on the problems that vex her clients. The desultory pace is fine, since she has only a detective manual, the frequently cited example of Agatha Christie and her instincts to guide her. Mma Ramotswe's cases come slowly and hesitantly at first: women who suspect their husbands are cheating on them a father worried that his daughter is sneaking off to see a boy a missing child who may have been killed by witchdoctors to make medicine a doctor who sometimes seems highly competent and sometimes seems to know almost nothing about medicine. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" serve not only to entertain but to explore conditions in Botswana in a way that is both penetrating and light thanks to Smith's deft touch. McCall Smith has created a lovely world of mainly (very) amateurish sleuthing - which whilst ostensibly the theme which is central to these books, is ultimately almost incidental. A series of vignettes linked to the establishment and growth of Mma Ramotswe's "No. A delightfully gentle series of books by Alexander McCall Smith - set in and around Botswana's capital city of Gaborone and stories of the 'No.1 Ladies Detective Agency'. The African-born author of more than 50 books, from children's stories ( The Perfect Hamburger) to scholarly works ( Forensic Aspects of Sleep), turns his talents to detection in this artful, pleasing novel about Mma (aka Precious) Ramotswe, Botswana's one and only lady private detective.

Suzuki is a daring writer and these stories will show the English-language world what she is made of. In these darkly playful and punky stories, the fantastical elements are always earthed by the universal pettiness of strife between the sexes, and the gritty reality of life on the lower rungs, whatever planet that ladder might be on. A bickering couple emigrate to a world that has worked out an innovative way to side-step the need for war, only to bring their quarrels (and something far more destructive) with them.Īnd in the title story, Suzuki offers readers a tragic and warped mirroring of her own final days as the tyranny of enforced screen-time and the mechanistion of labour bring about a shattering psychic collapse.Īt turns nonchalantly hip and charmingly deranged, Suzuki's singular slant on speculative fiction would be echoed in countless later works, from Margaret Atwood and Harumi Murakami, to Black Mirror and Ex Machina. Two old friends enjoy cocktails on a holiday resort planet where all is not as it seems. On a planet where men are contained in ghettoised isolation, women enjoy the fruits of a queer matriarchal utopia - until a boy escapes and a young woman's perception of the world is violently interupted. The years-long struggle to expose Harvey Weinstein and bring him to justice is an emotional rollercoaster ride and plays out like a thriller with twists and turns along the way." They said: "This is the story of the story. Speaking to Newsweek, Bailey and Barbato described the series as an "emotional rollercoaster ride." The Three of Us, a tightly constructed debut novel written during lockdown by British Nigerian Ore Agbaje-Williams, a book editor in the U.K., had me feeling trapped and looking for escape routes.īilled as a mashup of domestic noir and comedy of manners, Agbaje-Williams' novel closely tracks the insidious dynamic between three wealthy, well-educated young Brits of Nigerian descent - a married couple and the wife's devilishly manipulative best friend - over the course of a single wine-drenched day. But if this part is too odd for you, feel free to skip down to the main review below! I am going to write part this review in a slightly different style than usual, inspired by the strange writing prompts that Petey and Finn trades throughout the book. The book also confronts how society views women: it’s uncomfortable, at times it makes my skin crawl, but it’s 100% necessary. The book inspects the difference between the faces the world sees VS the people we are. Bone Gap is modern fairy tale and magical realism at its finest. |
